"The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don't want, drink what you don't like, and do what you'd rather not.”
---Mark Twain

what is detoxification?

Detoxification is the process that our bodies use to clear or neutralize toxins that need to be eliminated. Toxins can come from either one of two main sources: internal or external toxins.

what are internal toxins?

Internal toxins are the wastes that are created inside of our bodies during its daily functioning. These occur during biochemical, metabolic and cellular processes and need to be eliminated. An example of this is free radicals. Our thoughts, emotions and stress can also create biochemichal toxins in our body.

what are external toxins?

External toxins are any toxic substances that come directly from outside our body. These include substances that we may find in our pesticides found in our food, pollution in our air and water, medications we take, recreational drugs, cigarettes and alcohol are all common examples. Our body has to work hard to deal with all of these exogenous toxins.

However, our body is quite amazing. We have natural systems and processes in place to elminate toxins from our body.

then why do we need to do a detox?

Problems arise when these systems are overburdened or overloaded trying to process and eliminate too many toxins. This is a problem of excess.

Unfortunately, in modern society today we are dealing with excess toxins on a daily basis. Pesticides, heavy metals, PCBs, organochlorides, bisphenol-A, phthalates, PVC - these are just some of the toxic substances found in our everyday lives. These toxins are found in our kids toys, our cosmetics, our fish, our fresh fruits and vegetables, in our garden, in our water. They are ubiquitous.

There are a few basic systems our bodies have for elimination of toxins and wastes. All of these systems must be functioning optimally to be able to clear our body of unwanted and harmful substances.

For example, if you are constipated then wastes that were sent to be eliminated through your stool are just sitting there in your colon. These toxins can then be reabsorbed into your body and wreak havoc.

main detoxification systems in our body

Respiratory - lungs, throat, sinuses, nose
Gastrointestinal - liver, gallbladder, gut
Urinary - kidneys, bladder, urethra
Skin - sweat and sebaceous glands, tears
Lymphatic - lymph channels, lymph nodes

If our body is working well, with good immune and eliminative functions, we are able to handle basic everyday exposure to toxins. The question is how to support the elimination of toxins, heavy metals, excess mucus, congestion, and disease and to prevent, on a daily basis, the buildup of toxicity.

Through medically supervised detoxification, we clear toxins and wastes, decreasing our overall body burden, and allowing our body to work on optimizing its basic functions.

overview of seasonal detox progam

Detoxification involves dietary and lifestyle changes that reduce intake of toxins and improves elimination. Avoidance of chemicals, from all possible sources, refined foods, sugar, caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, and drugs helps minimize our toxic load. Drinking extra water (purified) and increasing fiber by including more fruits and vegetables in the diet are first steps in the detoxification process. Eating hypoallergenic foods and less congesting foods will also improve our detoxification systems.

However we can acheive quicker results if we help the body along by supporting detoxification through the use of herbs, homeopathic medicines and acupuncture.

why should detox be seasonal?

Traditionally in most cultures there is some sort of seasonal detoxification. Often it has been incorporated into religious ritual, but health benefits are still gained. These include fasting days, avoidance of certain foods, eating other specific foods etc. Between each season there is a shift of weather and energy. This transition time gives us the opportunity to prepare for the next season.

which seasons are best to detox?

Spring and Autumn are the most obvious times for detoxification.

Spring is when it is time to rid ourselves of all of the extra fat and toxins we have accumulated in the winter months.

Autumn is the opposite energy of spring. It is a time to rest and rejuvenate and rid ourselves of the excess of summer. We need to prepare and optimize our body's abilities to keep us healthy and strong for the winter ahead.
